A Parent’s Practical Guide to Healthier Screen Limits

Screen limits are not about control for the sake of control. They are about protecting attention, emotional stability, sleep, motivation, and family connectedness in a world designed to keep children overstimulated, distracted, and dependent on devices. Technology boundaries work best when they are clear, calm, and consistent.

Tools like Qustodio can help support that structure, but the larger goal is not surveillance. The larger goal is leadership. The larger goal is helping a child build a healthier relationship with technology while protecting the rhythms, relationships, and responsibilities that make development possible.

This is one of the ways Journey Home reflects a more modern model of support: not by pretending technology is neutral, but by helping families establish practical guardrails that strengthen the home rather than weaken it.

How to Set Up Qustodio

Phase 1:
The Control Center - Your Phone

This is where you will create your account and set up the main dashboard that allows you to manage your child’s digital environment with greater clarity and confidence.

  1. Download the Qustodio Parental Control App on your phone.

  2. Open the app and select I’m new to Qustodio.

  3. Create your account using an email address you check regularly.

  4. Set up your child’s profile by entering their name, birth year, and other requested details.

  5. Once completed, your parent dashboard will be ready to use.

Phase 2:
The Protected Device - Your Child’s Phone or Tablet

This step links your child’s device to your account so the protections can begin working where they are actually needed.

  1. On your child’s device, download the Kids App Qustodio.

  2. Open the app and select I have a parent account.

  3. Log in using the account you created on your own phone.

  4. Select your child’s profile.

  5. Follow the prompts carefully and grant all required permissions, including location access, monitoring permissions, and VPN setup when prompted.

  6. These permissions are essential for Qustodio to function properly.

Phase 3:
Set the Ground Rules

Once the devices are connected, you can begin creating healthier digital boundaries that support the emotional tone, sleep, and structure of the home.

  1. Set daily screen time limits based on your child’s age, needs, and routines.

  2. Create device-free hours for sleep, school, family time, and other protected parts of the day.

  3. Turn on web filtering to block harmful or high-risk content.

  4. Set app-specific rules for games, social media, and entertainment platforms.

  5. Revisit these settings regularly as your child grows and their needs change.

Parent-to-Parent Guidance

Talk About It Honestly
Explain to your child that these limits are not simply about restriction. They are about safety, balance, self-control, and building a healthier relationship with technology.

Do Not Panic Over Every Alert
Some dashboard alerts may be automatic or minor. Stay calm, read the details carefully, and respond with clarity instead of fear.

Test the System Yourself
Check blocked sites and app settings on your child’s device so you know the system is functioning the way you intended.

Remember the Bigger Picture
Screen limits are only one part of the work. Lasting change happens when technology boundaries are combined with healthier routines, stronger leadership, real-world connection, and greater accountability in the home.

Need More Than a Screen-Time Tool?

Screen limits are a good beginning, but they are not the whole solution. Many families need deeper support addressing the behavioral patterns, emotional disconnection, lack of structure, and household tension that often sit beneath technology overuse.

What makes Journey Home different is that we do not stop at symptom management. We help families think more broadly, lead more clearly, and build healthier patterns that go beyond the device itself. We believe true intervention must reach the roots of the problem, not merely manage its most visible expression.
